Hearing and Balance Disorders


Diseases of the ear include acute and chronic ear infections as well as conditions causing hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing or "head noises") and dizziness. The Head & Neck Surgical Group offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for otologic problems. These include complete audiologic testing and other more advanced evaluation methods (ABR, ENG). Our physicians are nationally recognized and experienced in all aspects of the treatment of ear disease. They perform surgery for hearing loss, chronic ear and mastoid infections, tumors and implantable hearing prostheses.

Affiliated services are provided by the New York Hearing Services which is comprised of audiologists who hold either a masters or doctoral degree, have earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA), and are licensed by the State of New York. They are experienced in the diagnosis, habilitation and rehabilitation of hearing and balance disorders.

THE SERVICES THEY OFFER INCLUDE:

  • Complete audiological evaluation comprised of air and bone conduction, speech recognition thresholds and speech discrimination.
  • Pediatric audiological evaluation comprised of soundfield testing and/or play audiometry, speech awareness thresholds, behavioral audiometry.
  • Impedance studies comprised of tympanograms, acoustic reflex testing, acoustic reflex decay, eustachian tube function.
  • Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR).
  • Electronystagmography (ENG).
  • Electrocochleography (ECoG).
  • Selecting, fitting and dispensing of hearing aids. All of our hearing aids have a 1 year warranty and a 30 day trial period.
  • Selecting, fitting and dispensing of assistive listening devices, alerting and captioning devices.
  • Custom ear molds for swimming and noise reduction.
  • Ear protection for musicians.

WHO SHOULD SEE AN AUDIOLOGIST?

  • Do you have problems hearing when background noise is present? On the phone? Watching TV?
  • Can you hear but not understand what is being said?
  • Are you 60 years old or over?
  • Do you have tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sounds) in one ear or both?
  • Does your child have a speech problem?
  • Was your child premature or was the birth considered high risk?
  • Have you ever been exposed to loud sounds?
  • Is there any history of hearing loss in your family?
