Marshall Strome, MD, MS, FACS
Dr. Marshall Strome, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.S. is a board certified otolaryngologist with a special interest in head and neck cancer surgery. After an internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, he completed a residency at University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Strome joined the Head and Neck Surgical Group in 1997.
His personal accomplishments have gained him recognition in the medical field, both nationally and internationally. In 1998, Dr. Strome performed the world’s first total human laryngeal transplant. In 2005, he performed the first robotic laser excision of a laryngeal malignancy. He has also developed a new endoscopic approach for laryngeal cancer and a new surgical procedure for aspiration. He has been honored to receive the medal of the city of Paris, France and is one of a select group of physicians recognized by the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the millennium for their contribution to medicine in the last 250 years. He has also received praise in other respects, including Outstanding People in the 20th Century, one of America’s Top Doctors in Guide to America’s Top Physicians, was listed as one of the Top Doctors of New York, and was cited as a “Medical Hero” in the Guinness Book of World Records Millennium Edition.
He has authored and contributed to more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters, most notably “Laryngeal transplantation and 40-month follow-up,” “Induction of Tolerance in rat model of laryngeal transplantation,” “Vocal fold healing after laser cordectomy with adjuvant cryotherapy,” and “Induction with T-cell receptor antibody leads to long-term laryngeal allograft function.” Dr. Strome has been a lecturer and visiting professor worldwide more than 100 times and has been on the scientific advisory boards of several companies. He has been featured on major TV programs and mentioned in well-known publications, such as Good Morning America and Readers Digest.
He is the Director for the Center for Head and Neck Oncology and Co-Director, Head and Neck Transplantation Program, Center for Facial Reconstruction, New York Head and Neck Institute. He is the immediate past Professor and Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Head and Neck Institute. His professional memberships include the Society of University Otolaryngologists, American Laryngological Association, American College of Surgeons, Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, and American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. His current research interests are human laryngeal transplantation, adoptive immunotherapy for head and neck cancer and robotic laryngology. In his free time, Dr. Strome enjoys being outdoors through long distance cycling, skulling, paddle-boarding, and outrigger canoeing.
