SUBMENTOPLASTY (CORRECTION OF A "DOUBLE CHIN")
Gravity and aging adversely affect the graceful curves and firm lines of the neck and jaw line during aging; the condition is commonly worsened by the deposition of excess fat beneath the chin and jaw that creates the so-called "double chin." "Wattles" and a "turkey gobbler" appearance ensue and are accentuated by drooping folds of muscle in the neck region.

A properly performed facelift and neck-lift will improve these aging phenomena, but not uncommonly a separate inconspicuous incision is required beneath the chin to adequately tighten excessive skin and remove fat deposits. Generally a more graceful and pleasing chin and neckline are immediately apparent after repair.

Liposuction (suctioning out localized fat deposits) is extremely beneficial in selected patients to improve the neck and face appearance. Once removed, the submental fat rarely returns as before unless significant excess weight is gained.
